बुद्ध पूर्णिमा ( A globalise celebration day)

The word ‘Buddha’ is a lovely word — it means ‘The one who knows’— We can use the word Buddha to refer to Gotama, the founder of what is now known as Buddhism, the historical sage who attained Parinibbana in India 2,500 years ago, the teacher of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, teachings from which we still benefit today.

  8. Emperor Ashoka also known as Ashoka the Great belonged to the Mauryan Dynasty who ruled the Indian sub-continent from 268 to 232 BCE. After the destructive war of Kalinga in about 260 BCE, Ashoka was repentant about the devastation and violence caused by it and this was the major incident which probably led him closer to Buddhism.
    Thank you.

Astrologers told Suddhodhana(father of Gautam Buddha or prince Siddhartha, as he was named as), that he would either become a very good and kind king or will become fed of this world and would do welfare to the people. Suddhodhana became very tense and decided to provide his son only happiness in the life. One day he told his father that he would like to see the whole town. His father ordered his ministers that prince should not get to see things which can give him pain.and he gets fed up of the world .
But this didn't happen. He first saw a old man , then a patient, and at last a dead man. He didn't know about the truths of the world and he became very sad to know that everything on the earth is temporary. He ran away from home that very night and sacrificed all sort of materials and did meditation and attained enlightenment.

He had a wife named Yasodhara and a son named Rahul.

  10. No matter what religion you follow, what culture you have been born and brought up in, Buddha’s teachings are universal. His teachings have the strength to awaken people to reality and make them introspect themselves. Lord Buddha’s teachings have not only given a deeper insight into one’s existence, but also made significant contribution in liberating one from the day-to-day conflicts in minds.

  13. Buddha Jayanti

Buddhists either Theravada or Mahayānā celebrate this auspicious event of the Buddha throughout the world. We celebrate on this occassion the three auspicious ceremony of the Buddha.
    1. The birth of Prince Siddhartha.
    2. The Supreme Enlightenment of the Buddha.
    3. The Great Demise or the Mahāparinibbāna of the Lord. Generally these three auspicious events of the Buddha are celebrated together on the same day, that is, the full moon day of the Buddhist lunar month of Vaishākha or Vishākhā which falls in the month of May.

This ceremony is called in different way in different countries. In India it is called Buddha Jayanti or Buddha Poornimā. In Sri Lanka it is called as Vesak Utsav or Vaishakhotsava. In Thailand, Laos and Cambodia it is called Vishākhā or Vaishālkha Poojā. In most of the Mahāyānā countries it is called Buddha Jayanti. Jayanti means "jubilee". This word has come into use from the event that the World Buddhists celebrated this ceremony in 1956 with the completion of 2500 years of the Buddha Era. From this grand event the Vaishākha Poojā is celebrated as Buddha Jayanti throughout the Buddhist world. About the fixation of the date or time of birth of Siddhartha Gautama has cast some controversies. History of Buddhism mentions that Prince Siddhārtha was born just 600 years before Christ. As per the information we get from this celebration of Buddha Jayanti, in the year 1956 Buddhist era had completed 2500 years. Now if you subtract, minus 1956 from 2500 it becomes 544 and it means that Prince Siddhārtha was born 544BC.

Anyway by this ceremony three important things had offered to all Buddhists.
    1. Counting of Buddhist Era.
    2. Introduction of the Buddhist flag.
    3. To celebrate the above mentioned three auspicious events of the Buddha on the same day by every Buddhist Countries.

  19. Buddhism is a faith that was found by Siddhartha Gautama more than 2500 years ago in India. With about 470 million followers, scholars consider Buddhism one of the major world religions. Its practice has historically been most prominent in East and South East Asia, but its influence is growing in the West. Many Buddhist ideas and philosophies overlap with those of other faiths.

    1. Shiddharth Gautama, the founder of Buddhism who later become known as “the Buddha” living during the 5th century B.C.
Gautama was born into a wealthy family as a prince in present day Nepal. Although he had an easy life, Gautama was moved by suffering in the world
He decided to give up his lavish lifestyle and endure poverty when this didn't fulfill him .He promoted the idea of the “Middle Way” which means existing between two extreams. Thus, he sought a life without indulgence but also without deprivation
After six years of searching , Buddhist believe Gautama found enlightenment while meditating under a Bodhi tree. He spent the rest of his life teaching others about how to achieve this spiritual state
When Gautama passed away around 483B.C.,his followers began to organize a religious movement.Buddha's teaching became the foundation for what would develop into Buddhism

  33. Buddha born in Lumbini,Nepal. His birth date is 8 April 563 BC. His full name is Siddhartha Gautama. Follwers of Buddhism have been celebrating Buddhist festivals for centuries, but the decision to celebrate vesak as Buddha's birthday was taken at the first conference of the world. Fellowship of Buddists held in Sri Lanka in 1950. Buddhism spread not only in India and Nepal it also spreded in the modern states like Ceylon,Burma,Tibet,Central Asia,China,Japan etc. Buddha Purnima was celebrated on 7 May. Siddhartha Gautama died at the age of 80 in sometime 410 and 370BCE. Any date between these two means that the Buddha passed away about 140 -- 100 years before the reign of Emperor Ashoka.

  34. Many Buddhists visit temples on Vesak to listen to monks give talks and recite ancient verses. Devout Buddhists may spend all day in one or more temples. Some temples display a small statue of Buddha as a baby. The statue is placed in a basin filled with water and decorated with flowers. Visitors to the temple pour water over the statue. This symbolizes a pure and new beginning.

Many Buddhists pay special attention to Buddha's teachings during Vesak. They may wear white robes and only eat vegetarian food on and around Vesak. Many people also give money, food or goods to organizations that help the poor, the elderly and those who are sick. Caged animals are bought and set free to display care for all living creatures, as preached by Buddha.
